We are excited to welcome a new resident to One Horton Heath with the arrival of a barn owl roosting in the one of the owl boxes at the site.
Installed in 2022, owl boxes in the north of the site provide a stable nesting or roosting site for Barn Owls. These owl boxes are ideally located on mature trees within a high canopy, creating a perfect habitat for Barn Owls to join the other wildlife calling One Horton Heath its home.
As Barn Owls map out their ‘home range’ – an area they use for hunting, roosting and breeding – around their roost, we anticipate this new resident to be a part of the ecology at the site for many years to come. In fact, this home range can be up to 4km radius from the owl box with its residents memorising the best hunting places and flight paths inside this area.
The success of these owl boxes is testament to the hard work of the project to ensure that nature and community can exist alongside each other, and we hope this will continue for many years to come.
