In celebration of Love Parks Week 2025 (25th July – 3rd August), we are exploring the green spaces across Horton Heath to explore the outdoor opportunities for future residents and those who already live locally.
The Lower Acre – An Acre of Green Space
As you may know, eastbrooke homes are delivering The Lower Acre – the first residential phase of One Horton Heath. The name ‘The Lower Acre’ refers to the acre of green space that will be located in the middle of the development. ‘The Acre’ will provide a green outlook for the surrounding homes and provide an outdoor recreation area on residents’ doorsteps. A future residential development, known as The Upper Acre, will also feature an acre of green space at its centre.
SuDS Ponds
Sustainable Drainage Solutions, or SuDS for short, are designed to reduce flood risks by directing rainwater into specially designed ponds throughout the development. These natural drainage features help to slow, filter, and absorb rainwater, reducing surface water runoff and supporting local biodiversity. When you visit the ponds in Horton Heath, you might spot a duck or two enjoying the water, as their natural design allows them to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
Newt Mitigation Ponds
Specialised ponds have been created across One Horton Heath to support the Great Crested Newt, the largest newt species in the UK, which is protected by both UK and European law. These ponds are designed to mimic the newt’s natural habitats, such as marshes and tussocky grassland. The largest area for newt conservation is located at the northernmost point of One Horton Heath. Established several years ago, these ponds now host a variety of newts and other pond life, enhancing the natural appearance of the area.
Recognising Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation
One of the primary goals of the One Horton Heath project has always been sustainability. In addition to tree planting and biodiversity enhancements, there is also a strong commitment to recognising Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINCs). These sites include woodlands, copses, and areas around natural streams that support diverse fauna and flora. We are committed to leaving these areas undisturbed and well-maintained to preserve their natural character.
Tree Planting
In addition to preserving native trees wherever possible, we have planted thousands of native trees across One Horton Heath, many of which are located along The Avenue, the 1.2-mile link road that runs through the OHH area from Fair Oak in the north to Hedge End in the south. Some of these trees are grown locally at the Allington Lane Tree Nursery, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transporting them from other locations. The trees provide a leafy outlook, seamlessly blending the built environment with the natural landscape.
Children’s Play Parks
With the extensive green space provided, play areas will be erected across Horton Heath as the overall development progresses. Public consultations on the green spaces and new development area will allow local residents to share their views on the design of these areas and what will benefit the community most.
Final Thoughts
As Love Parks Week highlights the importance of protecting and enjoying our green spaces, Horton Heath serves as an inspiring example of how thoughtful development can benefit both people and nature. From Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) ponds that promote biodiversity to dedicated habitats for protected species, welcoming play areas, and acres of open space, every aspect of One Horton Heath is designed with sustainability and community in mind. Whether you are a local resident, a potential homeowner, or a nature enthusiast exploring the area, there are countless opportunities to connect with the landscape and celebrate the benefits of green, healthy spaces for everyone.
