Building Better Connections
We’re excited to share that the latest infrastructure improvements around One Horton Heath are now complete, making travel in and around The Lower Acre easier and safer than ever.
Back in February, we highlighted plans for new connectivity projects in Horton Heath and Hedge End. Now, those works are finished and already making a difference.
New Pedestrian Crossing in Horton Heath
A new pedestrian crossing has been introduced on Burnetts Lane, between Meadowsweet Way and Bramley Gardens.
This crossing is already proving valuable for walkers and cyclists using the existing bridleway in and out of the village. Its thoughtful design doubles as a passing point, naturally encouraging drivers to slow down and creating a much safer experience for pedestrians.
Hedge End Train Station Path
South of The Lower Acre, a brand-new shared-use path now connects Bubb Lane to Hedge End Railway Station.
With a smooth new surface and added lighting columns, this path offers a safe and reliable option year-round – particularly welcome during the darker winter months.
The route is already popular with Deer Park School students, who now benefit from a safer, well-lit journey on foot. Before these works, the path was often muddy, pushing commuters to cut through residential roads instead. The upgrade aims to encourage more people to switch from cars to bikes or simply enjoy walking, utilising the footpaths now in place around One Horton Heath.
The Avenue: New Road
This month, an important new road was opened within One Horton Heath. Named The Avenue, this 1.2-mile stretch connects the Allington Lane roundabout in the north to the Burnetts Lane roundabout in the south.
True to its name, an avenue – traditionally defined as “a broad road typically lined with trees at regular intervals” – features over 700 newly planted trees alongside thousands of native shrubs. In addition to enhancing the landscape, the project features habitat-rich plantings and wildlife-friendly elements, including underground mammal tunnels and bee bricks, to support the local ecology.
The Avenue has a speed limit of 30 mph, and new cycle and pedestrian paths have been created alongside the road for safe travel. Supporting infrastructure includes drainage systems, street lighting, and bus stops to facilitate a future bus route connection.
A More Connected Community
With these improvements, both Horton Heath and Hedge End are now better equipped for safe, sustainable travel.
Keep an eye out, as there are more local improvement projects happening soon!
