Clean Air Day: Ground Source Heat Pumps

Today (19th June) is Clean Air Day and we’re spotlighting Ground Source Heat Pumps, as these will be the primary energy source of all homes in The Lower Acre, Horton Heath.

What are Ground Source Heat Pumps?

Ground Source Heat Pumps harness underground heat to provide heating and hot water for your home, performing the same function as a boiler. GSHPs are more sustainable than traditional heating and hot water systems because they do not burn fossil fuels and produce no carbon emissions at the point of use.

How do they work?

The ground source heat pump works by pumping a glycol fluid down into the ground through a network of boreholes up to 150 metres deep.

A ground source heat pump operates by pumping a glycol fluid deep into the ground through a network of boreholes that can extend up to 150 meters. The ground heats the glycol with warmth that originates from the sun. This solar energy is collected and sent back to the heat pump, which uses compressors to amplify the heat. This amplified heat is then used for heating and hot water in every home. Since the sun shines on the earth every day, the heat is effectively limitless.

What are the benefits of Ground Source Heat Pumps?

Ground source heat pumps are among the most efficient heating technologies available, with efficiency ratings of up to 400%. This means that for every 1 kilowatt of electricity consumed, you can generate up to 4 kilowatts of heat energy.

Additionally, GSHPs do not produce carbon emissions at the point of use and do not rely on fossil fuels like gas boilers do. Because GSHPs are located underground and sheltered from the elements, they can operate more efficiently than Air Source Heat Pumps, which often struggle in cold or freezing temperatures. The system outlet for the heat pump typically runs directly into the home (usually through a utility cupboard), while an Air Source Heat Pump unit needs to be installed outside, potentially taking up space in your garden or driveway.
